Nissan is preparing to compete with the giants in the electric and hybrid car industry.

Nissan's strategy to compete in the electric vehicle (EV) sector relies on four key elements: manufacturing excellence, cost reduction, monitoring customer needs, and leveraging the experiences of EV manufacturers from China and around the world, according to CEO Makoto Uchida.

Uchida stated that the Japanese automaker is following its medium- and long-term electric vehicle manufacturing strategy, announced under the name "The Ark" last March. He noted that this strategy follows a step-by-step approach, as the global transition to electric vehicles progresses at different rates, varying from region to region.

Nissan's electric vehicle sales surpassed the one million mark as of August 2023. The company has sold more than 650,000 units of its fully electric model, the Nissan Leaf, in 50 markets worldwide since its launch in December 2010. This is in addition to the Ariya and Sakura electric models, which were introduced in 2022, according to the company's website.

Uchida explained that market trends "require us to adapt to the shift towards electric vehicles while continuing to excel in internal combustion engine vehicle segments to meet the diverse needs of customers."

Cost Reduction Plan To enhance the company's competitiveness, Uchida pointed out that Nissan has a plan to lower the prices of electric vehicles over the next five years through manufacturing efficiency and large-scale production.

Nissan aims to reduce the cost of its next-generation electric vehicles by 30% and to achieve cost parity between electric vehicles and those powered by combustion engines by the fiscal year 2030, according to Bloomberg. The company plans to introduce 30 new models in the next three years, 16 of which will be electric.

Nissan is closely monitoring China's achievements in the electric vehicle industry, Uchida noted, adding that the company aims to learn from the experiences of Chinese companies and other global EV manufacturers.

Uchida's remarks were made on the sidelines of the launch event for the seventh-generation Nissan Patrol in Abu Dhabi. He explained that the company chose the UAE capital to unveil its new vehicle for the first time, in recognition of the long-standing relationship in the region. He also emphasized that the Nissan Patrol is equipped to meet the needs of consumers in the Gulf region.
